1st World Military Indoor Athletics Cup 2009
Greece wrote history. On the 15th March 2009, it was organized the 1st Indoor Athletics Military World Cup in Paianya area, just only 25 KM away from the centre of Athens. 16 CISM countries participated from 4 continents (Latvia, Belarus, Czech Republic, Poland, Albania, Italy, India, Greece, Brazil, Bangladesh, Cyprus, Qatar, Serbia, Slovenia, Algeria, and Mauritania). In total, 140 athletes, were running in 14 disciplines for 4 ½ hours of high level competition. The Greek Vice- Minister of National Defense declared the opening ceremony, followed by the short greetings of the CISM President: Brigadier General Gianni Gola. More than 1500 spectators had the chance to enjoy this high-level-event. Apart from the individual medals for the 3 winners of all disciplines, the Italian team was awarded 4 gold, 4 silver, and 3 bronze medals. Among the spectators were the Chief of the Greek Delegation Rear Admiral Ioannis - Sotirios Svarnias and the Cypriot General Director of the Sport Ministry Mr Kostas Papakostas.
During the closing banquet that took place on the 16th March 2009, the Greek Vice- Minister of National Defense Mr. Plakiotakis Ioannis, the Greek Minister of Sports Mr. Giannis Ioannidis confirmed officially the intention of Greece to be a candidate for the organization of the 6th Military World Games in 2015. They mentioned that Greece would submit very soon the official candidature-file.
In the meanwhile, after the unanimous consensus of the CISM Board of Directors during their meting in Parma (10 12 March 2009), Greece will organize the 43rd Marathon Military World Championship celebrating, in this way, the 2.500 years anniversary, since the historical battle in Marathon. According to the legend, in 490 BC, Pheidippides after having delivered the momentous message of the Greek victory over the Persians, he immediately collapsed and passed away. When the modern Olympic Games were inaugurated in 1896 in Greece, the legend of Pheidippides was revived by means of a 42,195 meters run from Marathon Bridge to the Panathinaikon stadium in Athens.
