Opening Ceremony
Modern Pentathlon Course

Last Monday afternoon we had the pleasure to start our first Modern Pentathlon Clinic in Rio de Janeiro Brazil from CISM Regional Development Centre. Four countries: Argentina, Brazil, Ecuador and Venezuela were the countries that took place at the opening ceremony. UIPM was represented by Mrs. Maria Santos from Portugal. She is an ex-UIPM Executive Board member, International Judge, actual board member of NOC Portugal and vice-president of the National Gymnastics Federation.

Some of former athletes   from the Brazilian Army that had competed in the 50s and 60s came to remember, change experience and inspire the youngest. The Clinic will happen this whole week and participants will have the opportunity to learn, improve and contribute to develop the sport through their countries.

Partnership between the UIPM and CISM
Modern Pentathlon Course

The CISM Secretary General, Col Alexandre Morisod, and the President of the Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM), Mr. Klaus Schormann, have fostered a partnership to enhance the level of the CISM American Regional Development Center in Brazil. After contacts between both authorities, IPM has agreed to send, from 21st to 26th November 2010, one international instructor to attend and coordinate, together with Brazilian Delegation, the next RDC Americas course in Modern Pentathlon.

The Americans participants will have the opportunity to increase their knowledge, skills and performance by doing theoretical and practical classes in all five disciplines of Modern Pentathlon. The facilities where the course will run are the same where the Rio Pan American Games took place in 2007, and the same where the 5th CISM World Military Games in 2011 and the Olympic Games in 2016 will happen.

CISM has been promoting the Modern Pentathlon worldwide and considering this discipline as one of the most important in its portfolio. Since 1963, CISM has been organizing 41 World Military Championships (18 of them in the last 19 years). In 2011 the event is confirmed as one of the disciplines in the 5th CISM World Military Games program. In 2010 the CISM athletes achieved good results, having high level military competitors well positioned in UIPM ranking. By now, CISM have 3 military male athletes in UIPM top 10 rank, and 5 on top 20. Also, in the top 10 female ranking CISM has one military athlete and two in top 20.

Undoubtedly, the UIPM participation in this course could be considered a milestone for CISM American RDC activities and for all American coaches and athletes, also reflecting in the UIPM and Military Modern Pentathlon overall development as well.

The stakeholders are very confident that this will be an outstanding occasion to raise the level of the Modern Pentathlon coaches in Americas and therefore, raise the level of the American athletes in the 5th Military World Games in Rio next year. After the course the participants will receive the UIPM Level 1 Accredited Coach Certificate.

According to Col Morisod, this is another contribution undertake by CISM HQ and Brazilian Delegation in favor of the CISM military athletes.

See you all in Rio!

Welcome to Brazil, once more!
