Open the Gates of the Barracks and Bring the Children in Tanzania

Twalipo Camp Youth Soccer Development Foundation is a newly “Open the Gates of the Barracks and Bring the Children in” project launched in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, in March 2008 and successfully continued last year. Twalipo Camp Youth Soccer Development Foundation (TCYSD) was established on 3rd December 2007. It comprises children of the Tanzania Peoples Defence Forces (TFDF) employees and less privileged children living in a neighbouring area of military barracks.

The project is co-financed by CISM, FIFA and the Tanzania People Defense Forces. The main purpose of the project is to give these children a chance to improve their cognitive, social and physical condition by means of sports. The TCYSD includes three youth soccer teams of age categories ranging from 7 years old to 17 years old, namely the under 12, under 15 and under 17.

The teaching, learning and training takes place at the Physical Training and Sports School within General Abdala Twalipo Military Camp, which is situated at Mgulani area, along Kilwa road in Temeke Municipal, about 8 km from Dar es Salaam city centre, in Tanzania.

This project also provides the young with an outlet for a worthwhile utilization of sporting activities, rather than hanging around and getting involved in drugs, alcohol, prostitution and other wrong doings.  Here are some of the main objectives of this project for 2009:

  1. To identify and develop children’s soccer talents.
  2. To teach them societal norms that will make them acceptable and integrated individuals in cognitive, affective and psychomotor dimensions.
  3. To empower the less privileged children with the knowledge and skills on prevention of HIV/AIDS, drug use/abuse, alcohol, crimes, prostitution and all other delinquent acts.
  4. To organize remedial classes for most troubling academic subjects (sciences, mathematics and English).
  5. To enable the children achieve both primary and secondary education.

Children have participated in more than 6 competitions, and, at the end of this initiative, the participants have been able to discover new values as cooperation, sportsmanship spirit, self discipline, loyalty, good peer relationship, sense of responsibility, adherence to rules and regulations, ability to live as well as work harmoniously with others, fairness and stress coping abilities. The project will therefore enable kids to make a choice for their future, and football can be the best way to reach this goal.

“Since inception to date, the Project “Open the Gates of the Barracks and Bring the Children in” has become a success as witnessed by activities done. To that effect therefore, on behalf of the Tanzania Peoples Defence Forces and the general public at large, we wish to send our gratitude to all CISM and FIFA for the financial supports given to run this project. We sincerely hope that with this project boys and girls will live to see their dreams come true. In so doing CISM’s efforts towards peace development in the whole world shall be realized.” (Tanzania Report).
