Considering the popularity of football (soccer) all over the world and the commitments of CISM to gain prominence and visibility all over the world, CISM decided to give up the old version of the CISM Football championship and to launch the CISM World Football Trophy, and the success came along immediately since the Republic of Azerbaijan immediately confirmed the organization of the first edition of the CISM World Football Trophy in the capital city Baku in 2013. The CISM Azerbaijan Delegation has regularly demonstrated its ability to host important CISM events such as the CISM world Military Boxing championship in 2009 and very recently, in 2010, Baku hosted the CISM European conference.

Baku is the capital, largest city, and largest port of Azerbaijan and the Caucasus region. It is located on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula, that projects into the Caspian Sea. The city is the scientific, cultural and industrial center of Azerbaijan. Many sizeable Azerbaijani institutions have their headquarters there. Today the vast majority of the population of Baku is ethnic Azerbaijanis (more than 90%). The intensive growth of the population started in the middle of the 19th century when Baku was a small town with the population of about 7 thousand people. The population increased again from about 13,000 in the 1860s to 112,000 in 1897 and 215,000 in 1913, making Baku the largest city in the Caucasus region.
