ycling is a sport that has met with mixed success ever since it was added to CISM's programme of events in 1972. Track and road cycle racing (in line and time trial events) as well as cyclo-cross races are all theoretically included in the programme of all world military cycling championships. Unfortunately, organising all three events at the same time in the same place is an extremely demanding task that often overwhelms potential organisers. For this reason, organisers are afforded a degree of flexibility, in the sense that they are allowed to organise separate championships for each of the three disciplines. Further proof of the lukewarm enthusiasm of potential world military cycling championship organisers is to be found in the fact that so far, only 17 cyclo-cross championships, 9 track cycling and 17 road cycling championships have been successfully organised.
This does not mean that military cycling does not attract high-level cyclists, however. The list of military champions includes such illustrious names as Stamsnijder, Liboton, Vanderaerden, Vaarten, Collinelli, Bartko, Voigt, Peschel, Ivanov, Brentjes and Berzin, to mention but a few. Such a record of famous entries clearly shows that our cyclists are top-notch athletes who offer top-quality performances at military events.
