41st World Military Fencing Championship
Bucharest (Romania),

Bucharest, the “home” of the Military Sport Club “Steaua” was the host of the 41st World Military Fencing Championship. 14 countries were present at the start of the competition, wishing to show to the spectators their athletes skills, many of them world and continental medalists.
During the Opening Ceremony, the Head of the Organizing Committee, Brigadier general Cătălin ZISU, made the traditional welcome address and underscored how proud his country was to host such a prominent event. Then Mrs. Ana PASCU, president of the Romanian Fencing Federation and vice-president of FIE, promised to all participants that during the championship she will do all the best for the technical development of the competition.
The Official CISM Representative, awarded the Order of Merit of CISM to lieutenant colonel Donald SCOTT (USA), secretary of the Fencing CISM Committee, as a recognition of his merits in the fencing family.
Finally Lieutenant colonel Rinette HULME (NAM), Official CISM Representative, formally declared the championship open and expressed satisfaction with the accommodation arrangements before calling upon all athletes to show respect, friendliness and honesty, thereby defending of their sport: “Winning is not just about going for gold”, she insisted, “it is also about gallantly embodying the CISM motto of Friendship through sport”.
The championship started with male sword competition, where the greatest number of teams was present. The winner was decided after the last match. Romanian sword team beat Belarus and the winner was …… Switzerland. What a show!
In the next days Romanian rule was fully preserved. It was the same story all over again during competition. Competing in front of the local public the Romanian military showed why they are medalists in civilian competition, also and won the gold.
The Cultural Day, featuring visits to Military Museum in Bucharest, the Parliament Palace and Village Museum was enriching. And finally, in the afternoon a barbecue party in a rustic environment closed the day.
After the competition, lieutenant colonel Joao Quadros(POR), President of Fencing CISM Committee, underscored the level of championship and thanked to lieutenant colonel Laura BADEA-CĂRLESCU, former Olympic Champion and member of his committee for her outstanding job made during the competition as chair person of Technical Jury.
Brigadier general Cătălin ZISU, head of the Organizing Committee received the CISM Honour Plate from lieutenant colonel Rinette HULME during the Closing Ceremony in well deserved recognition of the success of the 41st World Military Fencing Championship.
