Two Great Wins
The curtain just fell on the 49th World Military Ski Championship held in Voru, Estonia, and two nations leave with their heads held high.
 The first one is France, who imposed its dominion over all events on the programme. It won five out of six Nordic skiing disciplines, surrendering gold only to Germany in the Men’s Patrol Race. France does have world-class military athletes indeed, two of whom will be leaving the stage soon, putting an e nd to their international sporting careers: Sergeants Raphaël Poirée and Florence Baverel-Robert.
Raphaël Poirée, who started his career on European World Cup trails in Finland back in 1995, won eight biathlon world championships and four World Cups. Having climbed on 103 podiums, he is one of the most crowned athletes in this sport – which remains relatively confidential in France.
 Florence Baverel’s record may be less impressive but her last major win in the sprint event of the Turin Olympics she offered France its first Gold Medal in the women's biathlon. Remarkably regular in the shooting range, she climbed on many international event podiums.
Estonia too, made quite an impression. Indeed, snow was a rare commodity this winter and keeping the event on the programme was anything except easy. But it would have taken much more to discourage Captain Heino Märks, Estonian representative to CISM: he mobilised an entire battalion to comb the region, track down the smallest snowflake and bring it to the championship venue to put together two adequate trails for the athletes to use.
A quality championship, then, whose 2008 edition scheduled in Austria, will include a new demonstration event: mountaineering.

Deux grandes victoires
Le 49e championnat militaire de ski vient de se terminer à Voru en Estonie et deux nations peuvent repartir la tête haute.
La France tout d'abord avec sa suprématie dans toutes les disciplines proposées. Sur les six épreuves nordiques, elle en remporte cinq, ne laissant à l'Allemagne que la victoire de l'épreuve de patrouille hommes. La France possède des athlètes militaires de très grande renommée, dont deux quittent la scène en mettant un terme à leur carrière sportive internationale: les sergents Raphaël Poirée et Florence Baverel-Robert.
En ce qui concerne Raphaël Poirée, après avoir effectué ses débuts sur les circuits de coupe du monde en 1995 en Finlande, il a été huit fois champion du monde et a remporté quatre fois la coupe du monde en biathlon. Avec 103 podiums il devient un des plus titré dans ce sport encore peu connu en France.
Pour Florence Baverel, son palmarès est moins important, mais avec sa dernière victoire au sprint des JO de Turin, elle offre à la France la première victoire féminine en biathlon. D'une régularité remarquable au tir, elle possède de nombreux podiums sur le circuit mondial.
Mais l'Estonie a aussi largement impressionné. Avec un hiver avare en neige, le maintien de cette compétition s'avérait difficile. Mais il fallait plus pour dissuader le capitaine Heino Märks, représentant estonien auprès du CISM, qui, mobilisant tout un bataillon s'est mis en charge de ratisser toute la contrée pour récupérer le moindre grain de neige et offrir aux athlètes deux pistes de ski acceptables.
Un championnat de qualité, dont l'édition 2008 se déroulera en Autriche, avec une nouvelle activité de démonstration: le ski de montagne.
