LTG Lovelace
Chief of US Delegation
Opening Ceremony
The Opening Ceremony, chaired by Lt Gen Lovelace was attended by the US Delegation authorities, dignitaries and CISM representatives.
During his opening speech Lt Gen lovelace highlighted the importance of this event for the Armed Forces This year’s Symposium, will cover the over-arching topic of “The Impact of High Level Sports and the Military”. “Over the next week, we will look at the impact of Sports on the Military overall, and address the need to continue Military sports programs in times of dwindling resources.    Those of us who work with young Soldiers on a daily basis understand not only the physical value of Sport, but also the value that Sport has on a Soldier’s morale, emotional and mental health.  In times of shrinking budgets, many of you are finding yourselves under increasing pressure to justify the continuation of your Sports programs.  Hopefully this Symposium will provide you with valuable tools to use when you return to your countries that will enable you to enhance your programs.”

Gen Gianni Gola
President of CISM
Opening Ceremony
The President of CISM, General Gola, stressed the participation of 26 CISM member nations in the CISM Symposium. On this memorable occasion he saluted the wonderful work, which was done by the USA delegation, led by the Chief of Delegation, Lieutenant General Lovelace.
The President reminded everybody that the USA Delegation has been very actively involved in military sporting events since the first military allied games. He expressed his gratitude to Lieutenant Colonel Suba Saty, to Paulette Freese, and to their team for the preparation of this outstanding event among all the 24 Military World Championships organized this year. General Gola outlined the importance of the CISM’s connection with physical education sciences. He pointed out that the first Seminar was held in Italy, in 1956, according to the initiative of the CISM Academy. Since that moment, CISM has organized and has been involved in many scientific events, which allowed sharing scientific concepts among its member countries.
The President of CISM stressed that CISM has to promote values of sport and we have to convince our authorities that sports is a fundamental part of military training. Therefore, CISM will continue to promote scientific symposia.

Opening Ceremony
Symposium Director, Lt Col MC Mophuting, presented the Symposium “The Value and Impact of Sport in the Military” and The main theme was subdivided into five sub themes. The program was packed with very exciting and interesting topics. Many of the speakers who would be deliberating have very great reputation and their presentations were very interesting to lesson to. The program incorporated both physical education and sports medicine aspects as these are very inseparable subjects or there is a very thin line when you are talking from the pespective of sports and exercise science.

The first session addressed “the benefits of sport in the military” opened by a presentation from Dr Reidar Säfvenbom from Norway. His lecture informed us about our delegations opinion. This, fallowed by presentation of different nations sport program shows the broad perspective of our member nations interests and needs. CISM can however provide and match most of these expectations.

The second session addressed “Physical Education in the Military” presented an overview of the Czech Republic and Brazilian system of preparing army personnel to function as physical education professionals. Besides, an interesting overview of the evaluation procedures and standards of the United States Army, Navy, Air force and Marines was presented.

Session The biological
Effects of Sports in
Relation to Military Activities
The third session, chaired by Col P. Jenoure, President of the Sports Medicine Commission of CISM, dealt with the biological effects of sport in relation to military activities. It enclosed five presentations, with a 50% relation between non-doping related and doping related topics. This interesting by these matter was demonstrated in the intense discussion that took place at the end of the session; the very interactive exchange of opinion had to be stopped because the time was over, such long!

The fourth tackled the challenges facing military sport and society. During the session addressed “Military Sport and Society” the four speakers reviewed the range of issues that military sport face dealing with national sports organizations, sponsors, and society in general. The important time in the session was the lecture of the LT Christina Bengtsson when she emotionally showed the women athlete’s problems in high level sport.

he fifth session was dedicated to the women in the military sport, addressed “Women, and the military” .The session sought to enhance women's involvement in military sport by increasing the number of women decision-making members in sports bodies, and explored the possibility of building a more peaceful and better world through sport and the CISM Ideal (based on the principle of equality between men and women). There was a common thread throughout the two presentations that women face unique challenges in both sport and military careers. There was also consensus during the discussion period that women alone would not be able to resolve the problems and issues – there is a need for men, as well as women in leadership positions to support the needs of women, and help ease some of the issues that confront women in sports and in the military. The other item that came up during the discussion was that it will take more than just regulation to make the necessary changes for women to overcome issues such as sexual harassment and be able to be successful.

As a conclusion of the event it was clear that some subjects need more deep researches such as how military sport could contribute in a new context? Which could be the best way to share information among military physical education schools? How to reduce injures caused during the military training? Is the military sport prepared to deal with national sports organization? Which kind of obstacles is related with the participation of women in the military sport events? Some of these questions will be answered in the next CISM Symposium, in 2008.
